Rosen's often starkly elemental forms approach both drawing and sculpture through the idea of contour. Her sensibilities are driven by the intelligence of the body's encounter with nature: her work is about how things feel. "We don't just see things as a jumble of shapes," she tells us, "we know they are living forms. We can sense that." In other words, Rosen seeks something like the opposite of the uncanny: as the viewer takes in the artist's work, Rosen would have him experience the sensuous and welcome recognition of living forms. The shift is from a merely optical viewing of abstract shapes towards an experience of his own body encountering another living thing. But rather than a simple meet and greet, Rosen digs to the core of this type of experience with an insistence implying this is essence of the human condition: we learn to experience others as we experience ourselves. The logical outcome of this is the notion of the fundamental interconnectedness of all life. Nature is the stuff that binds us together. Or, simply, we are part of Nature.
