Deborah Randall: Visions of Landscape

Artist Reception: June 1 (First Friday Art Walk) 5 - 8 PM
Exhibition: June 1 - 30, 2007

Deborah Randall, Chianti 7, 12" x 12", oil on panel, 2007

Randall’s landscapes are painted in her Kennebunkport studio. Rather than literal renderings, they develop from real places and the artist’s sensibilities. “Most importantly, they have to succeed as paintings. They are inspired by real places but develop out of my vision of color, light and space.” While Randall’s landscapes usually depict Maine, the suite of twenty panels was inspired by a recent trip to Tuscany. “I always thought the Renaissance painters were making up the landscape, but it really looks like that. Traveling by car, the hills added to the drama: around every corner was another vista. The landscape would appear as a series of images with intense colors, especially the green—it pops.” Randall explains that the Italian work helps her to transcend her local experience of light and atmosphere. All of Randall’s work relates to some extent to the process of memory; even when inspired by the Italian landscape, as it is painted in Maine. “These images were not painted from specific photos—they are almost all from memory. I rely on my skills and sensibilities instead of a found image.”

Deborah Randall received her MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and her BFA from the California College of the Arts (formerly CCAC). While now dedicated to painting full time, Randall’s teaching positions have included Colby, University of Maine at Augusta, USM, UNE and Georgetown University.

Visions of Landscape is presented in conjunction with the Cooper Jackson Gallery where Deborah Randall's non-landscape works are represented.
