For the first exhibition of 2008, Daniel Kany Gallery is featuring Re-View, curated by Brendan Bullock, the Associate Director of the gallery. Bullock accepted open submissions in addition to inviting select Maine photographers to participate in Re-View. The works by the twelve artists selected for the exhibition focus on abstraction in photography across a range of techniques and approaches, from traditional black and white printing to the most advanced digital media. The artists each have 3 to 10 works in the show.

"When I put out the call for artists," explains Bullock, "I explained that my preference would be for a cohesive series of abstract or non-representational images. Cliche Maine photographs get a lot of air time, but there is also a large population of photographers producing challenging, diverse and sophisticated work, much of it displaying abstract sensibilities. We had a tremendous response and we are eager to showcase this talent."

Artists in Re-View include: Craig Becker (Portland) - Angela Devenny - Dani Fazio (Portland) - Michael Heiko (Portland) - Grace Hopkins-Lisle - Ramona du Houx (Solon) - Rob Hyde - Sharon Koeblinger (Portland) - Arla Patch (Bryant Pond) - Alan Sockloff (Brunswick) - Ruth Sylmor (Cape Elizabeth) - Jeff Woodbury (South Portland).

As a member of the professional photographic community and through his affiliation with the Bakery Photographic Collective in Westbrook, Bullock has come to know dozens of artists and their photographic work--much of which is not familiar to the art-viewing public. "Returning to New England after spending the last five years in the Santa Fe contemporary art scene, I was surprised to find such strong and sophisticated photography here. I have been especially impressed with the Maine photographers' sense of detail, content and object presentation."

Brendan Bullock is a photographer whose work has been shown in numerous exhibitions. Before taking the position of Associate Director at the Daniel Kany Gallery in Portland, Bullock was at Evo Gallery in Santa Fe, showing the work of such photographers as Hiroshi Sugimoto and Donald Sultan. Bullock also worked for Shiprock Santa Fe where he oversaw a collection of vintage photographs by Edward Sheriff Curtis. Bullock's most recent solo exhibition was at Price Dewey Gallery in 2005. He was one of three featured artists in the Daniel Kany Gallery's December 2007 exhibition, Solstice Salon.

Re-View will be on view through February 16th, 2008.
