Tracy Johnson: New Jewlery

Artist Reception: Wednesday, Dec 3, 5 - 7 pm
First Friday Art Walk Opening: Dec 5, 5 - 8 pm
December Hours: Mon-Tues 11-2 pm; Wed-Sat 11-5 pm; Fri 11-7 pm

Award winning jeweler, Tracy Johnson, will be the featured artist for December 2008 at the Daniel Kany Gallery in Portland, Maine. The public is invited to the meet the Harpswell artist at the opening reception to be held on Wednesday, December 3rd, from 5-7 p.m., two days before First Friday.

Johnson's work has developed a sophisticated level of artistry over the past three decades. Selecting the finest gemstones, often rare and unusual, and surrounding them in high karat gold, Johnson blends traditional goldsmithing techniques with contemporary interpretations.

Working in both wax carving and fabrication methods, Johnson has developed a notable style that is sophisticated and controlled, but seemingly loose and comfortable. Many of Johnson's newest pieces are convertible: earrings come apart to give the wearer more options; versatile necklaces can be worn several different ways.

This will be Johnson's first solo exhibition with the gallery.

"Many people describe the gallery as specializing in fine craft," explains owner Daniel Kany. "That's fine, but I honestly don't see a distinction between art and craft: art and kitsch, maybe. One of my favorite shows we have done featured works by members of the Maine Craft Association. The jewelry was exceptionally strong in general and Tracy Johnson won the exhibition's "Curator's Award"for her necklace, Ancient Artifact, which will be featured in this exhibition as well."

The artist will be available for consultations and to discuss commissions on Fridays at the gallery (or by appointment: 207+774.2100). Johnson specializes in remounting her clients' older gemstones in new designs.

New Jewlwery by Tracy Johnson will be on view at the Daniel Kany gallery through December 27, 2008.
