Past and Future:
Photography by Arthur Fink: Dance & Dancers
Artist Reception: First Friday, Feb 6, 5 - 8 pm
An exhibition of 24 color photographs by Arthur Fink, Dance and Dancers, will run from January 23 to February 28, 2009 at the Daniel Kany Gallery in Portland, Maine. The gallery, located at 89 Exchange Street – a block down from City Hall, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm.
As a photographer, Arthur Fink has been working with dancers for two decades. The work in Dance and Dancers is mostly from his book Dance! which Fink largely shot during the last four summers as resident photographer at the Bates Dance Festival, the Omi International Dance Collective in 2008, as well as in dancers' studios in Boston and New York.
In the preface to Dance!, Fink writes: "I document the work and energy that goes into dance -- not just the final performance. Being in the studio as dances are created, or even as dancers prepare themselves, feels like being in a delivery room as children are being born. Amidst pain or anguish ..., tempered with rhythm and support, and bolstered with faith, new life emerges. It's physical, sometimes sensual, often spiritual. Too often this process is ignored, as image makers look only at the final result -- the dance."
Arthur Fink's background includes master classes at the Maine Photographic Workshops with Kate Carter, Arnold Newman, Joyce Tenneson, Lilo Raymond, Eugene Richards and others. His work is in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art as well as a number of other collections. Fink teaches workshops on dance photography and is regarded as one of the preeminent dance photographers working in New England.
While limited copies will be available at the gallery, Dance!>/i> is available for sale at the gallery or through the artist's Web site (www.arthurfinkphoto.com) for $24. Review copies are available as well: 207+774.2100.
Dance & Dancers will be on view at the Daniel Kany gallery through February 29, 2009.
